Dr. McDonald
I graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School with honors. I was inducted into OKU, a national honorary dental society. From there, I went to the Army's Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco and spent a year in an internship program. I left there and went to the Hospital at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and was head of the Oral Surgery Department for six months. I then went to a clinic, where I was able to provide complete dental care utilizing the skills I had honed over the previous 18 months.

I am on the staff at Charlton Memorial Hospital and Same Day SurgiClinic, both in Fall River, Mass. I continue to educate myself in the latest advances in materials, techniques and technology. Each year, I take almost two to three times the required number of continuing education hours so I can provide state-of-the-art care.

I am a member of the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society and past president of the local Southeastern Dental Society. I am also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I have attended the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. I am an alumnus of the L.D. Pankey Institute. I am an active member in the Providence Plantations Study Club.

Q. What if I have a chipped tooth or teeth that do not respond to normal bleaching methods?
A. Porcelain veneers are designed to look like your natural teeth and are individually and permanently attached to the fronts of your existing teeth. Bonding utilizes a composite material made of plastic to fill in areas of your teeth and correct chipping and shape problems. Both porcelain veneers and bonding are color-matched to the rest of your teeth.

Q. I know my smile needs some work, but I'm not sure if I can afford to have cosmetic dental work done.
A. The cost of cosmetic dental work depends on how much work you want done. Like any cosmetic process, cost will increase with the amount of product or services you deserve. A cosmetic dentist can explain various prices and the best procedure for you. Also, some cosmetic dental options are covered by insurance. Cosmetic dental work is probably not as expensive as you think. Investment in cosmetic dentistry is an investment in you. It can lead to an improved dental appearance and help improve self-esteem and overall confidence.

Q. There's a big gap between my two front teeth. Can that be changed?
A. Yes, Boned veneers can close gaps and help create the smile you desire. Bonded resins generally require one office visit, while porcelain veneering takes two.
